    Mobilizing for the Planet

    ?

One of the Greatest Challenges of our Age

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that between 2030 and 2050 climate change will cause an estimated 250,000 additional deaths each year. Climate change has direct health impacts as it can lead to extreme weather phenomena such as heatwaves or extreme cold, food shortages, difficulties in accessing drinking water and increased air pollution. Climate change also induces indirect effects such as creating favorable conditions for the spread of vector-borne diseases or increasing the pollen levels.

Sanofi has committed to monitoring and reducing its environmental impact through its strategy, “Planet Mobilization”, to limit the impact on the environment at every stage of the product lifecycle: from the raw materials we use in our medicines, devices and services to their potential end-of-life impact on human health and the environment.

We have identified five key environmental topics associated with our operations:

    • Greenhouse gas emissions
    • Water resources
    • Pharmaceuticals in the environment
    • Waste
    • Biodiversity

    Employees Mobilize for the Planet

Word Environment Day is a great opportunity to show that we are all involved in promoting environmental protection, from how we operate on our sites to our projects and individual daily habits.

This year, we chose to make a focus on waste management with the implementation of the 3R principles: Reduce/Recycle/Reuse/.

In accordance with local regulations we have designed a waste management program with procedures to identify, organize, collect, sort, process, store, transport and dispose of different types of waste.

In 2018, the quantity of waste decreased by 10% compared to 2017 and 73% was recycled. The Planet Mobilization strategy highlights robust initiatives around waste:

    • Optimizing solvent use and valorization for better waste management
    • Making the best use of blister packaging materials
    • Supporting take-back programs to collect unused medicines
    • Implementing actions to combat food waste
